Placemaking Week Tāmaki Makaurau is 11-20 October 2019! It’s all about ‘Lighter Quicker Cheaper’ community-led activations, building a community of placemakers of all kinds across Tāmaki Makaurau and having fun! We are starting small so we can learn as we go.

And you can join in!

Become a Place Leader and use one of the Community Placemaking Kits to develop ideas that can make public spaces in your community reflect the things that matter to you, involve other locals and are fun! Or join a team and help make an idea happen. Or visit an activation, come to a workshop or an event. Details of the workshops and events will be listed on the facebook page, and on this website.

We are open to [most] other ideas too - contact us to talk more.

What is placemaking?

Placemaking inspires people to collectively reimagine and reinvent public spaces as the heart of every community. Strengthening the connection between people and the places they share, Placemaking refers to a collaborative process by which we can shape our public realm in order to maximize shared value. More than just promoting better urban design, Placemaking facilitates creative patterns of use, paying particular attention to the physical, cultural, and social identities that define a place and support its ongoing evolution.

What is an activation?

Any activity or infrastructure that enriches the space, making it more alive and people friendly. Activating is about making spaces inclusive, memorable, unified, innovative and entrepreneurial. Most activations are either physical (e.g. art, installations and community resources) or events (e.g. street theatre, music and food). Check out the activations that are happening this upcoming Placemaking Week here.
